The Supreme Court delivered a unanimous verdict on Thursday, granting the Delhi government legislative and executive powers over services.
This decision came after a constitutional bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud heard the Delhi government versus Centre dispute regarding power demarcation.
The court stated that the elected government should have control over the administration, rejecting Justice Ashok Bhushan’s 2019 ruling that the city government lacks authority over services.
Following this verdict, AAP leaders hailed it as a victory for the people of Delhi. Notably, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had previously expressed frustration over his inability to appoint officers or even a peon due to restrictions.
