On October 17, the Supreme Court rejected the recognition of same-sex marriages, Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, while delivering the verdict on same-sex marriage, stated that the Supreme Court cannot nullify the provisions of the Special Marriage Act.

However, in 2018, the Supreme Court’s Constitutional Bench had indeed made a decision to decriminalize same-sex relationships. In reality, Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code used to categorize same-sex relationships as a crime, but in 2018, the Supreme Court removed it from the category of offenses.

LGBTQIA+ का पूरा रूप होता है:

L – Lesbian (लेस्बियन) G – Gay (गे) B – Bisexual (द्विलिंगी) T – Transgender (ट्रांसजेंडर) Q – Queer (क्वियर) या Questioning (संदेह) I – Intersex (इंटरसेक्स) A – Asexual (एसेक्षुअल)

Let’s understand the meaning of LGBTQIA+:

Lesbian: When a woman or girl is attracted to individuals of the same gender, they are called “lesbian.” In this case, both partners are women. Sometimes, one partner may have a look or personality that resembles a man or may not.

Gay: When a man is attracted to another man, he is called “gay.” The term “gay” is often used to refer to the entire LGBTQI community, which includes “lesbian,” “gay,” and “bisexual.”

Bisexual: When a person is attracted to both men and women and engages in sexual relationships with both, they are referred to as “bisexual.” Both men and women can be bisexual.

Transgender: Transgender individuals belong to the third gender category. They are people who are born with physical attributes that resemble those of a man, and they are initially identified as boys. However, as they grow older and recognize their identity, they may identify as girls. In that case, they are called “trans women,” and the reverse is “trans men.”

Queer: The term “queer” is used to describe the entire LGBTQI community. It can also refer to individuals who do not identify with any gender or sexual orientation, meaning they don’t identify as a man, woman, or any specific sexual orientation like “lesbian,” “gay,” or “bisexual.”

Intersex: According to the Intersex Society of North America, this term defines individuals who are born without typical reproductive organs of either men or women. They are also considered a part of the transgender community. These are people whose genitalia at birth do not clearly indicate whether they are a boy or a girl.

Asexual or Ally: The term “asexual” is used for people who do not feel sexual attraction toward any gender. They may be able to have romantic relationships with others but do not engage in sexual relationships. The term “ally” is used for individuals who support the rights of LGBTQI people, even if they don’t belong to the community themselves.

These definitions provide insight into the diverse range of gender identities and sexual orientations within the LGBTQIA+ community.
